Is colonic irrigation safe?

Colonic irrigation is a therapy primarily designed to cleanse and promote health in the large bowel. Practitioners of colonic irrigation believe that the treatment can flush out impacted faeces, mucus and other elements that may impair healthy bowel function and also add to toxicity in the body.

It is thought that by helping to cleanse the colon and the system generally, colonic irrigation can help to promote health and vitality.

My experience with colonics has been very positive. I have had a few myself, and sometimes recommend them to patients who I feel might benefit from them.

I don't know if there is any 'evidence' about the safety of this therapy. However, in more than ten years, I have never heard of anyone coming to any harm at all from this treatment.

As with everything in life, there are no assurances, but it does appear that colonic irrigation is very safe indeed. Nevertheless, it is a good idea to see a qualified practitioner.

The Association and Register of Colon Hydrotherapists holds a list of suitably qualified individuals, and details of local practitioners can be obtained from their website (http://www.colonic-association.com).

Hippocrates, Pare and Galen also advanced the use of enema therapy.

In earlier times, people implemented enema treatments in a river by using a hollow reed to induce water to flow into the rectum.

While an unclean, weak and poorly functioning colon, is a breeding ground for disease, sickness and death. Serious health problems can arise if the colon is not properly cared for, and based on the statistics, colon health care in the UK has been woefully neglected.
